It is dawn, and I am sitting on my mat. My thumb closes one nostril, I breathe in through the other, switch, release. That is all. From the outside, almost nothing. From the inside, something strange happens: the path of the air between the two nostrils draws a sideways eight. It has been my favourite practice for years, and for a long time I did not notice what my breath was drawing day after day: the sign of infinity. I did not choose the eight as the method’s sign. It was in my breath before it was in my notebook.

Eight steps, one loop
When a method began to take shape from my own path, eight steps emerged. Stillness, Vision, Root, Values, Focus, Letting go, Landing, Gratitude. The eightfold path of yoga inspired it, but it asks for no belief: every step is experience. You do it, and you watch what happens.
The order is not accidental. First you grow still, because you cannot hear your own desire while other people’s expectations are speaking. Then you write down what you want, so concretely that you will recognise it when it arrives. You look at where it comes from: fear or love. You pass it through the filter of your values. You return to it again and again. You act, but you do not clutch. You bring it into the everyday with small, light steps. And when it arrives, you give thanks.

The voice of science
That the method’s first step is stillness and breath is not a mood choice. A 2018 review in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience, drawing on dozens of studies, describes how slow breathing, around six breaths a minute, switches on the body’s braking system: the pulse slows, blood pressure drops, attention clears. Researchers in Dublin showed in the same year that the rhythm of the breath directly tunes the brain’s centre for attention. What the yogis call prana, the lab calls nervous system regulation. The point is the same: with your breath, you take the reins into your own hands.
Why the sideways eight?
Because the eighth step is not the end. Gratitude loops back into Stillness, towards a new dream. Not a ladder you finish at the top of, but a loop you walk again for every dream you have. That is why its sign is the sideways eight: the path that leads you back to yourself, one layer deeper with every round.
The eight steps are not an exam you pass. They are a ladder you will climb again for the rest of your life.
